Care services rated by the CQC including those ordered to make improvements
Inspectors have been visiting care providers across the North East to check on their standards.
Reports on findings at care homes, surgeries and care agencies have been published in recent weeks by the Care and Quality Commission.
With some being rated as 'Good' others have been rated 'Requires Improvement' and have been offered advice on how to improve their services.
Here we look at recent inspections on services in the North East.
Richmond Court, Hall Lane, Willington, Crook
Overall rating: Requires improvement
Richmond Court is a residential care home providing personal and nursing care to 42 people at the time of the inspection. The service can support up to 49 people. The home accommodates people with a learning disability and/or autism on the ground floor. On the first floor, nursing care is provided to people, many of whom are living with dementia.
Inspectors found medicines were not always managed safely. Systems did not always show staff how and when to give medicines, and medicines were not always stored safely.
Although there had been some recent improvements the provider had not fully acted on feedback given at the last inspection to ensure care was truly person centred. People with a learning disability were accessing the community and taking part in more skill building activities but there was not always evidence these were planned to meet people's long-term goals or improve their outcomes
People gave positive feedback about the caring nature of the service. Staff spoke positively about the service and the management. Feedback was sought and acted on. Relatives and staff described the registered manager as approachable and responsive to any issues raised.
The last rating for this service was requires improvement (published 16 June 2022). The service remains rated requires improvement. This service has been rated requires improvement for the last 2 consecutive inspections.

Overall rating: Good
St Thomas Complex is a care home providing accommodation and personal care to up to 52 people. The service provides support to older people including people who live with a dementia.
Inspectors recommended about ensuring staffing levels and staff deployment are kept under review on the lower ground floor of the home to ensure people are kept engaged and stimulated if they wish.
Staff followed good infection control practices. A programme of refurbishment was taking place around the home.

The Oaks Care Home is a ‘care home’. People in care homes receive accommodation and nursing and/or personal care as a single package under one contractual agreement dependent on their registration with us. The Oaks Care Home is a care home with nursing care.
Some improvements had made to the management of risk, but there were still some risks to people’s safety and the management of distressed behaviour. Improvements had been made to some records, however further improvements were needed.
Care plans were not broken down to provide guidance for staff so people received personalised, consistent care for each identified care and support need.
A quality assurance system was in place, to assess the standards of care in the service. Improvements had been made to the running of the service since the last inspection to ensure people received safe care. However, further improvement was needed to ensure people received person-centred care.
There were sufficient staff to support people safely. Care was task-centred rather than person-centred. Due to staff being busy they did not have time to spend with people.
Inspectors recommended about ensuring staffing levels and staff deployment are kept under review so people are kept engaged and stimulated if they choose.
Improvements had been made to medicines management.
A programme of refurbishment was taking place to ensure the environment was safe and comfortable. The standard of hygiene was improving and there was more effective odour control.
People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests; the policies and systems in the service supported this practice.

Eternity Care Ltd is a domiciliary care agency providing personal care to older people and people living with a dementia. At the time of the inspection there were 11 people using the service.
Inspectors found people spoke positively about the care they received from the service. Staff had friendly but professional relationships with people and helped them to achieve positive care outcomes.
People and relatives were encouraged to take part in care planning. Medicines were managed safely. Risks to people were assessed and addressed. Staffing was monitored to ensure people received safe support.
The registered manager was going to review how rotas were monitored to reduce the risk of missed calls. Safe recruitment processes were in place. People were safeguarded from abuse. The provider had effective infection prevention and control systems.
Staff were supported with regular training, supervision and appraisal. People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests. The policies and systems in the service supported this practice. People's needs were effectively assessed and reviewed on an ongoing basis.
People received personalised support, which was regularly reviewed by them and their relatives. Staff were knowledgeable about people's support needs. The provider had a clear complaints process, which was shared with people and relatives.
People, relatives and staff spoke positively about the management and leadership of the service. Feedback was sought and acted on. Regular checks were carried out to monitor and improve the support people received. Effective partnership working was taking place with a range of external professionals.
This service was registered with on September 1, 2021, and this was the first inspection.
