Spanish forward Eliezer Mayenda reflected on a positive pre-season so far for Sunderland following the victory over Blackpool at Bloomfield Road on Saturday.
The 19-year-old got the first 90-minute match of pre-season under his belt – along with eight other players – and was happy with the game overall as a collective.
Mayenda, now a year into a five-year contract and who finished last season on loan at Hibernian, told the club: “We played very well [against Blackpool] and we’re playing Tuesday against Bradford and then Saturday against Marseille,” he said.

“It’s good for me to get the first 90 minutes this pre-season, so I felt it more during the game. We just need to keep working and we’ll be ready for the first game of the season.”
The Sunderland striker has led the line in three pre-season games so far under Régis Le Bris, and is looking forward to the start of the 2024/25 campaign under the new head coach.
“I’m very excited to start the season and I feel we are nearly ready for the first game [against Cardiff]. The gaffer just says we need to keep working and find a good creation, good pressures, find the triangles between each other, and he just tells us to be more confident ahead of the first game, that’s the most important thing.”
