Keen runners still have a chance to sign up for the popular 5k event which kicks off the action for the Great North Run weekend.
The Great North 5k takes place on the Friday night before the Great North Run and is seen as the 'curtain raiser' for the main event. This year's 5k will take place at 6pm on September 6 and there are some spaces still available.
The 10,500 places for the Saturday events - September 7's junior and mini runs which also help make up the AJ Bell-sponsored weekend of action - are already sold out as, of course, is the Great North Run whose places are always snapped up fast and which, on Sunday, September 8, will again see around 60,000 people run the world-famous half marathon's Newcastle to South Shields route.
So, the Great North 5k offers a last chance to be involved for those wanting to be a part of the big weekend and it takes place on the same evening as the UK Athletics 5k Road Running Championships with its total prize pot of £6,000.
Described as 'a fun, fast, flat' dash, the 5k's route is around the quayside and those running it will receive a medal and a T-shirt at the finish line. Paul Foster, chief executive of The Great Run Company, said: "The Great North 5k is always an exciting event on the Friday evening on the Newcastle and Gateshead quayside and, with places still available, there's still opportunity to be a part of the Great North Run weekend.”
The 5k and Elite 5k races are also supported by the North East Combined Authority and North East Mayor Kim McGuinness said: "This is an exciting opportunity to soak up the atmosphere of our great region, play your part and be able to say I was there. If you haven't done so, I'd urge you, your friends and family to sign up and join us in the North East for a weekend that will make memories to last a lifetime."
Anyone wanting to enter for the 5k can do so here. The 5k is open to anyone aged 14-plus and the standard entry cost is £23, with an additional £2 booking fee.
