Get ready to 'step in time' and down a 'spoonful of sugar' as one of the most popular musicals in the world will be coming to Sunderland for the first time ever next year.
Many of us grew up with the film version of Mary Poppins, with the double act of Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke part of many a childhood, as we all quickly learnt all the words to the likes of Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and It's A Jolly Holiday. The hit musical version of the much cherished Disney movie made an award winning debut in London's West End in 2004 and, following another highly successful run in the capital, it will soon hit the road on a new UK tour.
And the good news for audiences in the North East is that, as well as calling in at places like Bristol, Edinburgh and Dublin, the Mary Poppins tour has now added a stint at Sunderland Empire to its list, with the show confirmed to be taking over the famous theatre from October 1-25 2025. You can sign up for pre-sale tickets HERE. Casting details will be annouunced in due course.

Based on the stories of P.L. Travers and the Walt Disney film, the story of the world’s favourite nanny arriving on Cherry Tree Lane is more magical than ever before featuring dazzling choreography, incredible effects and unforgettable songs.
The timeless score includes the classic Sherman Brothers songs; Jolly Holiday, Step in Time, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and Feed the Birds with new songs and additional music and lyrics by the Olivier award-winning British team of George Stiles and Anthony Drewe.
The reaction to the news that Mary Poppins will be making its Sunderland debut has already been huge, with a teaser for its arrival causing a real stir on social media on Wednesday night, before the Empire fully let the cat out of the bag on Thursday morning.
