A Newcastle pervert who videoed himself raping an unconscious woman has died behind bars.
In July 2019, Barry Wemyss was jailed for rape for 12 years after he forced himself on a vulnerable mum when she was "completely unresponsive" having consumed drugs. The victim had no idea what he had done until she became aware of the "appalling and sickening" footage.
When confronted with the footage by police, Wemyss admitted making it but claimed it was done consensually and that he had stopped the recording the sex when he realised she was "zonked out". But the traumatised victim told police she had no recollection of the events depicted in the footage.

Following his court case, Wemyss was serving his sentence at HMP Northumberland, a category C men's prison in Morpeth. But on July 17 last year, he died at the age of 46 from heart failure.
Following his death, an independent investigation was carried out by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO). In a recently published report, the PPO confirmed it had not found any non-clinical issues of concern.
The report says: "The clinical reviewer concluded that the clinical care Mr Wemyss received was of a reasonable standard and equivalent to that which he could have expected to receive in the community. We make the following recommendation related to the clinical care Mr Wemyss received; the head of healthcare should ensure that all patients who present with chest pain have an electrocardiogram (ECG) undertaken in accordance with NICE guidelines NG95 Recent-onset chest pain of suspected cardiac origin; assessment and diagnosis."
The inquest, held on July 16 this year, concluded that Wemyss died from natural causes. NHS England also commissioned an independent clinical reviewer to review his clinical care at HMP Northumberland. The clinical reviewer concluded that the care he received was of a reasonable standard and equivalent to that which he could have expected to receive in the community.
