A Northumberland teenager has accepted a place at a top US college which could kickstart his career.
Harry Ryder, 18, who grew up in Northumberland but moved to Gosforth two years ago, whose passion for rugby has already saw him play for three top regional teams during peak seasons, has now landed himself a prestigious scholarship at the New-York based Siena College, in USA.
The A-Level student, has balanced his commitment to studying Business, Psychology and PE at Fenham based independent school, Dame Allan's, alongside his passion for the sport, which has now paid off to launch his rugby career even further.

Harry began his rugby career when he started playing from just six years old for Morpeth Rugby Club. Since then, his love for the sport, and his impressive skill set catapulted, resulting in playing county, club and later school rugby, representing the first XV at Dame Allan's from year 11 to 13.
It was during his time playing for the school teams, that he got the opportunity to impress Newcastle Falcons Academy in 2020. After earning a place in the regional development program in 2019 for his prowess on the field, Harry was given a trial a year later. Since then he has been fortunate to hone his talents for four years through the development pathway.
In order to secure his place at Siena College, Harry impressed coaches from across America and gained their attention through compiling a highlight reel showcasing his talent. Harry said he was inclined to pick Sienna College for its: "Resources, ambition and strong rugby program."
"I really liked Sienna's set up, they play in Division 1, with a successful track record in National playoffs and 7s competitions, so it really appealed to me," Harry added, who has demonstrated his ability by continuing to play for all 3-teams, until leaving Morpeth in 2022 after a decade of commitment to the club.
Dame Allan's, named North East Independent School of the Year 2023 in The Sunday Times Parent Power Guide, supported Harry, alongside Elite Rugby Scholars, a US college rugby consultancy service, to secure his scholarship. Adam Hay, Head of Rugby at Dame Allan's Schools, praised Harry's dedication: "Harry has been an exceptional player and leader. His commitment to the sport and his team has been inspiring. We are proud of his achievements and excited to see him excel at Siena College.”
Whilst Will Scott, Principal at Dame Allan also commented on Harry's success: "His transformation from a young rugby enthusiast to a promising athlete heading to the US is a testament to his dedication and passion. His achievements both on the field and in the classroom exemplify the qualities we strive to nurture in our students.
Harry has managed to balance completing his A-Level studies with training 4-times a week and weekend games. "We look forward to following his future successes and are confident he will be an excellent ambassador for our school and the sport.," the Principal added.
Harrys move to the prestigious college, renown for its competitive sports teams, will also allow him to further explore other studies he enjoyed during his time at school. The US University structure involves completing 'minors' in the first two years and 'majors' in the latter two years. Harry is considering majors in sports, business, nutrition or a combination of these fields.
Speaking of his bright future ahead, Harry said: "I’m thrilled to be joining Siena College and continuing my rugby journey in the USA. The support from my family, coaches at Dame Allan's and my peers has been incredible."
