There are a number of road closures in place across the North East this week that drivers should be aware of.

Some roads in the region are closed while others have lane closures, and temporary traffic measures or diversion routes may also be in place. Motorists are advised to make allowances for these closures and use alternative routes if necessary.

If you're planning to travel through Newcastle, Gateshead, Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Sunderland or County Durham this week, take a look at the list below to see whether your journey will be impacted.

Newcastle

  • Colgrove Place in both directions closed due to water main work from Newlyn Road to Kinross Drive, Kenton. Until March 26.

  • Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A191 Benton Park Road at A189 Killingworth Road (South Gosforth roundabout). Until May 27.

  • Pottery Lane closed due to roadworks from Shot Factory Lane to B1600 Forth Banks. Until February 2025.

  • Pilgrim Street southbound closed due to long-term roadworks between Blackett Street and A167 (Swan House Roundabout). Until March 2025.

  • Queen Victoria Road southbound closed due to roadworks from B1318 Claremont Road to Richardson Road. Until March 2025.

Gateshead

  • Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on Rose Street at Team Street. Until March 31.
  • Rose Street in both directions closed due to gas main work between Vine Close and Morrison Street. Until March 31.

  • Narrow lanes and speed restriction of 50mph due to major widening works on A1 Western Bypass in both directions from J67 Kingsway South (Coalhouse Roundabout) to A1(M) J65 / A194M Birtley. Expect delays. Work to create an extra lane in each direction. Until May 2025.

North Tyneside

  • Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on Beach Road at Regents Drive, Tynemouth. Until May 31.

  • Temporary traffic lights due to long-term roadworks on Liddell Street near Clive Street, North Shields. Until May 13.

  • Tyne Street closed due to roadworks from Union Street to Linskill Street, North Shields. Until May 15.

  • Bell Street in both directions closed due to roadworks from Liddell Street to Union Quay, North Shields. Until June 21.

South Tyneside

  • Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on A183 Mill Lane at Fern Avenue, Whitburn. Until May 31.

  • Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A183 Coast Road near Kingsway. Until June 14.

  • Laygate Street closed due to roadworks from Commercial Road to West Holborn, South Shields. Until 6pm on March 31.

Northumberland

  • B6344 in both directions closed due to roadworks between the A697 (Longframlington) and Longframlington turn-off (Pauperhaugh). Until March 29.

  • One lane closed due to gas main work on Storey Street at Tyne Tunnel turn off, Cramlington. Until 11pm on April 1.

  • Temporary traffic lights due to electricity work on Ovingham Road at Main Road, Wylam. Until 5pm on April 4.
  • Bridge Street closed due to roadworks from B1329 to B1327 Union Street, Blyth. Until November.

Sunderland

  • Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on Fulwell Road near Stranton Terrace. Until April 16.

  • Viewforth Terrace eastbound closed due to new road layout from Eston Grove to A1018 Newcastle Road. Until February 2025.

  • Easington Street in both directions closed due to roadworks from Sheepfolds North to Richmond Street. Until September 2025.

  • No through traffic allowed due to new road layout on Berwick Avenue from Birrell Street to Barrow Street, Castletown. Until January 2026.

County Durham

  • One lane closed due to gas main work on A167 Park Road Central Northbound from B1284 Rotary Way to BP Garage, Chester-le-Street. Until March 28.

  • Temporary traffic lights due to electricity work on Damson Way near Dragonville. Until 7pm on March 28.

  • Temporary traffic lights due to electricity work on Damson Way in both directions at Dragonville Link Road. Until 7pm on March 28.

  • Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A182 near Admiralty Way, Dawdon. Until September.

  • Wallnook Lane in both directions closed due to roadworks between Front Terrace and Firs Terrace, Langley Park. Until December.
