He's a man still very much revered in this part of the world and ex Newcastle United keeper Shay Given will be the star attraction at a Wideopen pub in just a few weeks time. And the even better news is that free pints are up for grabs to mark the occasion as well.
Originally a cult hero with fans of arch rivals Sunderland, thanks to his successful loan spell from Blackburn, in the 1995/6 season which saw the Black Cats clinch promotion to the Premiership, Shay clinched a move to NUFC in a £2.5 million in 1997, a move that would pay the way for him becoming a legend in the eyes of Magpies supporters.
Irish international Shay was a key member of the NUFC team who were runners up in the FA Cup for two successive seasons in 1998 and 1999, before going onto be named in the Premier League of the season for 2001/2. Having also played in the Champions League for United, Given left Tyneside for Manchester City in 2009, also playing top level European football for the Blues as well.
