Vera fans were left delighted after a repeat of the ITV series made a return on Monday night - with another one to follow tonight. The classic episode was from series 11, which meant Brenda Blethyn was reunited with her former co-star Kenny Doughty, who played Aiden Healy.
The synopsis for series 11, episode six, which aires tonight reads: "DCI Stanhope is called out to the banks of the River Tyne, where the body of a young woman has been washed up.
"Although the victim appears to have been a popular manager at a local green energy company, as well as a loyal friend and a loving mother and wife, Vera uncovers a web of intrigue, betrayal, and lost promises as she has to unravel the woman's complicated personal and professional life to find her killer."
Despite his heartbreaking exit earlier this year, fans were thrilled to see DS Healy back on screens and many took to social media to share their thoughts.
Taking to a Facebook fan page, one fan commented: "Repeats, not that I am complaining I like to rewatch any episode.
"Great to see Aiden back," another beamed while someone else agreed: "Yes, love him."
A fourth fan went on: "Wahoo, something good to watch."
"I would rather watch Vera than any sport," another chimed in.
Kenny was last seen on screen in Vera in the 2023 Christmas special, but he was mentioned when the series returned earlier this year with Joe Ashworth (played by David Leon) back as DCI Stanhope's sidekick.
In spring 2023, Kenny confirmed his "difficult decision" to leave. On Instagram, he expressed his gratitude, saying: "I want to thank everyone who's made this amazing time so joyous, ITV, Silverprint, all the brilliant cast and crew BUT of course my buddy and inspiration Brenda Blethyn.
"The perfect leading star who I owe so much to. I feel lucky to have you as a friend, you make me howl with laughter and have been a rock for me over the years. I can't thank you enough. Precious times."
He concluded his heartfelt message with a nod to the show's dedicated audience: "And finally the Vera fans: without you and your support I would never have made so many films. You really are the best fans in the world. Thank you so much for your loyalty and love for the show."
The actor has kept a low profile since his exit, but more recently, Kenny shared his new project with his followers.
He has landed a new role in a series called The Au Pair with Death in Paradise star Sally Bretton.
Vera returns tonight at 8pm on ITV.
